The youngest child of L.L. Chiles and Emily Hitchcock Chiles, Emily (or Emma as she was known in the family) died suddenly on the 9th anniversary of her mother's death. She left two young children, Mabel, not quite 5, and Marye Dabney, 10 months.

Excerpt from Virginia Chiles Higgason's diary, June 10, 1886. Of the death of her youngest sister she wrote :

"How sad and sorry I feel, how much to regret; if we only knew how short a time we have to be together, how tender and kind we would be. Just last Saturday she was here and today placed in the grave. I am to have the baby and Mollie [will take] Mabel."
