He was survived by his wife, Sue Bates; sons, Kirk Bates (Tammy) and Amos Bates (Tione); daughter, Tarrye Odle (Gary); mother, Thema Bates; sisters, Trudie Taylor, Ann Taylor (Ray) and Kay Jones (Bobby); brothers, M.D. Bates (Joy), Red Bates (Nora) and Bobby Joe Bates; grandchildren, Chynna Malolepozy, Ty Ragsdale, Seth Bates, Ziane Bates, Kolin Sander, Khrystina Thannisch; mother-in-law, Dorothy Southerland; and an extended family of relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Beti Bates Ragsdale; father, C.R. Bates; father-in-law, C.L. Southerland; brother-in-law, Elize Taylor. His funeral was held at Grace Baptist Church in Durant, OK, with The Rev. Anthony Williams officiating.
