In about 1864 the family emigrated to Utah. By 1870 the family was living in Corinne, Utah. Richard and his two sons were working as butchers.
On December 17, 1872 Ralph married Margaret Inglis in Corinne. Ralph and Margaret had nine children. In about 1881 the family relocated to Adams, Massachusetts, and Ralph worked as a butcher until he went blind.
He farmed with the help of his sons, and was killed in a tragic train accident in December 1895. His 15 year old son, William Waddington Martin, was driving a horse and wagon loaded with potatoes when it was struck by a train. Ralph was killed instantly, and William survived.
After the accident the family broke up. Some of the children went West to New Mexico, and some stayed in Massachusetts with their mother.
