Mrs. Susan Monk, wife of Mr. Miles Monk, Sr., died at their home in North Moultrie Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. Monk had been in a very delicate state of health for some time, she bore her suffering with great fortitude and met death with that confidence and resignation that only comes to those conscious of having performed well their work in this world and assured of a better life beyond the grave. In her last hours she was surrounded by her children and brothers and sisters who tenderly nursed her as long as human hands could avail anything.
Mrs. Monks remains were interred in the cemetery at Plesant Grove Church and Elder R. Rhodes performed the burial ceremony.
Mrs. Monk was about 56 years old. She is survived by her husband and six children and nine step-children. She was the daughter of Mr. Bryant Norman, who is still living at Norman Park, and a sister of Messrs. J.B., Jr., M.D., R.L. and V.F. Norman. She was the connecting link between two large, wealthy and prominent families of the county, and her relatives were almost innumerable.

Despite there being a specific date on Susan Lugenia (née Norman) Monk's gravestone (12 Mar 1855), it is extremely unlikely that date is correct, and her exact birth date is possibly unknown. Even her obituary states she was "about 56" when she died on 14 March 1905. If that age (56) is to be believed, it would place her birth year in 1848 or 1849. However, that would be too early since she was not enumerated on the 1850 US Federal Census, which implies she was born after 01 Jun 1850 (the "census date" in 1850). Now, in the 1860 and 1870 censuses, while she still lived at home, she is consistently enumerated as the fourth-oldest child, placed between Julia (b. 1848) and Jeremiah (b. 1852). Susan was possibly born in late 1850 based on the rate of childbirth in this family. Even so, if one assumes that March 12th is her correct birth month and date, then it is entirely plausible that she was born on 12 Mar 1851, which would still allow enough time for her brother Jeremiah to be born on 04 Mar 1852.
