Nelson was the son of Robert Emmons. He married Amanda Brusse/Bresse about 1829 in Chenango County, New York, and they had children: Jeremiah, Charles, William, Elizabeth, Ann, and Robert Watson. After Amanda died about 1848, Nelson married Mary Jane Conant on 23 June 1849 in Wood County. Nelson was killed by a run-away team and buried in Pea Ridge which was part of the acreage purchased by him in 1845. Parts of his tombstone were recovered by g-g-grandchiildren probing the area. A monument was erected in Portage Cemetery in honor of Nelson, his wife, Amanda, and his daughter-in-law, Maranda (wife of his son, Jeremiah).
