Manus served as a Private, Company C, 1st Delaware Infantry during the Civil War.

He was referred to as Manus, Sr. in company records because he was 14 years older than the other Manus Boyles in the same unit.

He enlisted in the 1st Delaware in 1861 for a 3 year term. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being 35 years old, employed as a Laborer, and residing in Wilmington, Delaware.

Manus was "Killed In Action" in the Battle of Antietam during the war.
