Hattie Hutchins Hockaday, 78, was born in Detroit, Michigan on May 8, 1920, was the seventh child born to the union of the late Robert Park Williams and Emma Gertrude (Hutchins) Williams. Hattie was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Howard Julius Hockaday, Sr. To this union eight children were born. A son, Ernest Avery Hockaday, Sr., preceded her in death.

She was educated the Detroit Public School system and attended Cass Technical High School. She was employed by the Charter Township of Clinton, where she retired June 15, 1989 after 35 years as Chief Custodian. She contributed expertise in her work as well as loyalty, leadership and commitment to public service.

This dynamic woman showed and proved that a successful career and dedication to family life were possible. In addition to raising her own children, her maternal instincts also led her to take many fellow employees under her wings, as well as friends in the community, and care for them as if they were her own.

During her early years, Hattie attended Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Clinton Township, where she reared her family in the fear of God and instilled in them good moral and Christian values. In her most recent years she was a long time supporter of Bethlehem Temple Church and attended as her health would allow. She continued to listen to Pastor Bradley's radio broadcast on Sunday mornings and would always remark, "I listsened to B. T. this morning and it sure was good."

Hattie departed this life on June 27, 1998 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital West in Clinton Township, Michigan. She leaves to rejoice in her memory; five daughters, Brenda Smith, Gertrude Robinson, Priscilla Lee, Louella Hockaday and Geraldine (Charles) Brown all of Mt. Clemens; two sons, Howard J. Hockaday, Jr. of Mt. Clemens and Everett J. (Deborah) Hockaday of Maryland; two sisters, Edna Robinson and Jessie Bell Johnson of Detroit; one brother, Ben (Doris) Williams of Detroit; five sisters-in-law, Nettie Hockaday of Philadelphia, Marion Lewis of California, Rosemany Williams of Ypsilanti, Hattie Mae Williams and Doris Williams of Detroit; 27 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Six brothers, Jesse Lee, Harold, Stewart, Gerald Everett and Arthur Williams and three sisters, Evelina and Geraldine Williams and Robert Lee Sharp preceded her in death.
