Elias was born 4 March 1846 in Illinois to Samuel Sidler and Nancy Myers. Samuel was born about 1823 in Germany and was killed accidentally by the explosion of a steamboat on the Red river near Oelwein, Fayette, Iowa in 1850. He is buried in Westgate, Iowa. Nancy was born 1 September 1827 in Virginia.

He is a brother to William Henry, born in Illinois, and Melissa, born in Iowa after her father's death. Elias and William Henry were raised by their maternal grandparents after their father's death. He is a half-brother to Ellen, John Wesley, Mary Agnes, Nelson A., Liva, and Benjamin P. Gerken, all born in Iowa.

He was issued a homestead of 80 acres on 31 March 1882 at Pass Creek, Douglas, Oregon.

He married Maggie Utley, his cousin, in 1892. She was born about 1847 in Illinois and died about 1902. They had no children.

Elias died 11 September 1917.
