Augustus was the fourth son of Charles and Catharine (Wise) Strayline. His three older brothers enlisted and fought for the Union during the Civil War. One brother, Theodore, died at the Battle of Gettysburg, July 3, 1863.
Augustus remained with his mother for much of his life as shown in the census records between 1850-1880. He worked as a stone molder and in an iron foundry. Sadly, in the 1900 census Augustus was listed as a patient in the Pennsylvania State Asylum for the Chronic Insane in Berks, PA where he remained for the rest of his life. The last census record in which he is listed at the asylum is 1920; he was then 74 years of age.

Data found indicating that Augustus "fell from a church steeple at 19th and Montgomery Avenue; he died in Holmesburg Mental Hospital."

Gravesite Details Charles and 3 of his sons, Theodore, Augustus and Ferdinand were originally buried in American Mechanics Cemetery (now defunct). Their remains were moved to Philadelphia Memorial Park in 1951.
