WILLIAM SLAYTER, EARLY RESIDENT IS DEAD AT 82
A graveside service will be held Wednesday afternoon in Eugene for a long-time Lane County resident and World War I veteran who died Sunday.

William Enos Slayter, 82, 1280 Golden Ave., died at his home following a lengthy illness.

Slayter, the son of pioneer parents Isaiah and Alice Slayter, was born in Blachly, Ore., on March 12, 1894.

With his parents, and later by himself, Slayter operated the Blachly Market and post office.

He also owned and operated several logging trucks in the Blachly area.

In 1947 Slqayter moved to Tillamook. In 1956, after living briefly in Roseburg, he moved to Eugene, where he worked in a hardware store until his retirement in 1967.

During World War I, Slayter served with the U. S. Army at Camp Lewis. He was an active member of the Elks Lodge.

He is survived by his wife, Edna; one son, Gene Slayter of Springfield, three step-children: Wanda Kennison ofLeaburg, John Dunning of Roseburg and Helen Forster of Santa Barbara, Calif.; a brother, Robert Slayter of Blachly, and a sister, Gertie Syphers of Cottage Grove.

Slayter is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Lane Memorial Gardens. Contributions in Slayter's memory may be made to the Oregon Lung Assn. or the American Cancer Society.

Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Lou Slayter in 1969. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, November 24 at 2 p.m. in Lane Memorial Gardens with Reverend Stanton Irvine of the Springfield First Conservative Baptist Church officiating. Visitation hours will be 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Oregon Lung Association or American Cancer Society in his memory.
