Worked at the Capitol

Tom N. Chapman, 81, of 922 E. 6th, died Friday morning at the Missoula Community Hospital after a brief illness.

He was born Sept. 2, 1908, in Omaha, Neb. to Rosa and Charles Chapman. They moved to Montana in 1918 and settled in the Ryegate area. He attended school there, graduating from the Ryegate High School.

On Feb. 11, 1937, he married Dorothy Hildrath in Butte.

He ranched for several years in the Ryegate area then followed the mining industry at Dillon and Butte. He moved to Helena where he was employed for a time as a fireman on the Northern Pacific Railroad. For several years he worked at Curey Appliance as a refrigerator repairman, Beginning in 1955, and until his retirement in 1973, he was a maintenance engineer at the Capitol.

He was a member of King Solomon Lodge No. 9, AF&AM, Scottish Rite Bodies, and the Helena Senior Center Club.

Survivors include his wife Dorothy; a daughter and son-in-law; Linda and Dave Davisson, of Helena, and a daughter, Patricia Whalen, of St. Maries, Idaho; a sister, Faye Blackburn, of Seattle; a brother, Jack Chapman of Hebron, Neb.; two granddaughters, Gay Wilson of Post Falls, Idaho, and Sherry Miller of St. Maries, Idaho; a great-grandson and great-granddaughter; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Joseph Chapman.

Private funeral services have been held. Retz Funerl Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
