Shellie Johnson "S. J." Robinson Jr., 76 of St. Matthews, passed away at his residence Friday, July 12, 2013, after an extended illness. He was the son of the late Shellie Johnson Robinson, Sr. and the late Grace Edith Golson Robinson. He was predeceased by two sisters, Edith Annette Robinson Davis and Betty Miranda Robinson Davis.

He attended St. Matthews schools and the University of South Carolina. He was a walk-on football player with the University of South Carolina and was an avid fan of USC sports. S. J. joined the United States Army in October 1957 and trained at Fort Jackson and Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. He served in Okinawa and was honorably discharged in August 1960. A year later, S. J. was called back into active duty due to the Berlin Crisis and served his country until September 1962. Following his military service, he worked for Mutual Finance in Orangeburg until 1967 and then began working as a Supervisor at Carolina Eastman, retiring in August 1997. He respectfully served on the Lower Savannah Council of Government and the Calhoun County Council. He was a member of the St. Matthews Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are his loving wife, Barbara Grace Campbell Robinson of the home; two daughters, Kimberly "Kim" Rene Robinson of Orangeburg and Dina Joyce Robinson Brandon (Matt) of Columbia; a son, Shellie Johnson "Jay" Robinson, III (Crystal) of St. Matthews; a sister, Jewell Aliene "Doots" Davis of Orangeburg; grandchildren, Lawton Johnson Robinson, Rachel Victoria Robinson and Kinsey Reed Brandon; nine stepchildren; 12 step-grandchildren; one step great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 2 PM on Monday, July 15, 2013 in St. Matthews Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. John Mark Patrick officiating. Interment, with military honors, will follow in West End Cemetery.

Honored to serve as pallbearers were Webbie Davis, Wayne Davis, Yuri Davis, David Robinson, Mark Davis, Greg Ackerman, and Leland Robinson. Honorary Pallbearers were Keith Hildebrand, Jimmie Terry, Ray Wilkie and Eddie Wright.

Dukes-Harley Funeral Home assisted the family.
