Gustav was the son of Johannes Stark and Julianna Fredericka Henricka Wasser Stark. He arrived to the U.S. in 1853 and married the widow of his brother, Gustav William Stark. He erected the first brick building in Fernandina which served as a bakery and confectionary located at 202-204 Centre Street on Amelia Island (called the Stark building). He was a member of the Fernandina Lyceum Association and the Nassau Light Artillery.
