Tighlman was one of the last living pioneers of Howard County, when he died. His family moved to Howard County, from Johnson County, Indiana when He was 4 years old. He grew up near the famous, old Sycamore Tree that grew along the banks of Wildcat Creek, in Ervin Township. He remembered an Indian encampment near the cabin where his family lived and spoke often of Shinglemacy, Chief of the tribe coming to visit with his father, Jeremiah HARRELL, who was considered the strongest man in the county for many years. Tighlmans wife Charlotte was the Grandaughter of John HARRISON, first Sherrif of Howard County. They brought 12 children into the world, 4 of whom lived to adulthood.
