He was a teacher and one of the founders of the public schools in the District. The Abbot School was named after him. He was a personal friend and secretary to Daniel Webster, who gave him a place in the Department of State. He was appointed consul to Sheffield, England by Mr. Seward. Mr. Evarts appointed him commercial agent at Goderich. He was a trustee of the Columbian College and the Miner School.
