Actor. He is best remembered for his recurring portrayal of Johnny Travers, the youthful sidekick of Hopalong Cassidy. Born William Bennett George, after serving in the United States Army Air Force during World War II, upon being honorably discharged he settled in California and began his career appearing in stock companies. After being discovered by director Lesley Selander during a casting call for bit players, he was so impressed by his blonde good looks, slim physique, and perfect posture, that he arranged for him to begin a career in the film industry beginning with him being under his supervision in "Undercover Man" (1942). From there, he would go on to enjoy a successful career as a character actor appearing in over 30 features; often typecast as husbands, fathers, retail clerks, neighbors, faithful friends, doctors, playboys, blue-collared guys, and military men. He appeared in such feature films as "Lost Canyon" (1942), "Border Patrol" (1943), "Marshall of Reno" (1944), "Wagon Wheels Westward" (1945), "Days of Buffalo Bill" (1946), "Bells of San Angelo" (1947), "Son of God's Country" (1948), and "Masked Raiders" (1949). During the advent of television, he became an even more familiar face appearing in various guest spots on such syndicated sitcoms as "The Unexpected," "The Life of Riley," "Adventures of Wild Bill Hickock," "The Gene Autry Show," "The Cisco Kid," "The Roy Rogers Show," "The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin," and "The Adventures of Kit Carson". During his career, he was a member of the Screen Actors Guild, was supportive of the Motion Picture and Television Fund, had been an active member of the Hollywood Democratic Committee, was a regular parishioner of the Episcopal church, had been the celebrity spokesman for Laramie Cigarettes, was a male model for the Forbes Agency, had presided on his local charters of the American Red Cross and the Seeing Eye, and he was married to fellow actresses Carmella George and Donivee Lee (both unions ended in divorce and he produced one son with George). Upon retiring from acting in 1957, he spent the final years of his life focused on charitable and religious causes while working as a male secretary for H&R Block. According to his death certificate, William Bennett George suffered severe injuries when his car overturned in Norwalk, Los Angeles County, California on August 15, 1963. He passed away July 30, 1964 at the Sawtelle Veterans Administration Hospital, Los Angeles, and had been a patient there for months. He was cremated at the Veterans Administration Crematory.
