David was educated at a district school on Boone's Creek in Tennessee, and at Holston Institute in Jonesboro. After teaching school for two years in his native state he taught for a year and a half in Texas, returning to Tennessee in 1873. In 1874 he removed to California and for six years taught school in Monterey county.
He then entered the grain and warehouse business in the Salinas Valley, forming a partner ship with Thomas W. Faw under the firm name of Faw & Edwards.
In 1887 he removed to Los Angeles where in 1889 he formed with Max N. Newmark the firm of Newmark & Edwards, wholesale grain dealers and warehousemen, with headquarters in Los Angeles and warehouses in Redondo, Wiseburn, Northam, El Toro and Compton.
He retired from active business in 1906.
He was a director of the Merchants National Bank of Los Angeles.
From 1906 to 1909 he was a member of the Los Angeles board of public works and inspector of public works.
From 1911 to 1914 he was chairman of the Los Angeles county highway commission, which built 300 miles of good roads. For twenty years he was a director of the Y.M.C.A. of Los Angeles, to which he contributed liberally.
He was a member of the Los Angeles chamber of commerce, the Masonic order and the California and San Gabriel Valley Country clubs.
He also held various positions of honor and responsibility in the Temple Baptist Church at Los Angeles.
Among the outstanding attributes of his character were love of his fellow man, a deep sense of personal responsibility as a citizen and a keen pleasure in the simple routine of his daily life. He radiated kindness and friendliness and his time, energy and financial resources were at the disposal of any worthy cause.
In the will of David's father, Samuel E. Edwards, dated 1897, is this statement "In consideration of educational advantages, before the other children became of age, my son, David K. Edwards, requested that he be allowed nothing in the estate." A better description of his character than mere words can state.
