ALLEEN ROBERTA SUMNER
1921 - 2010

Alleen Roberta Sumner, age 88, of Blountstown, FL passed away on July 7, 2010. She was born on September 21, 1921 in Napa, California but moved with her family to Coronado in 1922.
Her mother and father, Etta and Bert Copsey; step-father, Frank Wardwell; and brother, Kenneth Copsey, preceded Alleen in death.
Alleen worked in the instrument shop at North Island, San Diego and later married Burrel Edmund Sumner on January 28, 1945 in Coronado, California. The marraige began her "career" as a military wife and mother. After 20 years of moving around the United States, her husband retired from the Marine Corps in 1960 and the Sumners settled in Pensacola, FL to raise their family.
Alleen was a member of the Warrington United Methodist Church and joined the Fellowship Sunday School Class in 1954. She was a member of the Warrington Chapter #205 Order of the Eastern Star in Pensacola, FL and served as Worthy Matron in 1971. Chapter #205 later became affiliated with Chapter #9. Alleen stayed active in many activities, including 1,000 hours of volunteer work at the National Museum of Naval Aviation, volunteering for the USO at the Pensacola Airport and she enjoyed traveling in their RV motor home before Hurricane Ivan destroyed their home in 2004 in the Pensacola area, which required a drastic move for Alleen and her husband to Blountstown, Florida.
Alleen had the gift of encouragement and a wonderful positive attitude that she imparted to her family and all those she met. She was always there for those who needed her and will be dearly missed by all.
Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Burrel Edmund Sumner of Blountstown, FL; two daughters and their husbands, Cherl and Quentin Henderson of Blountstown, FL; Jolene and Ron Hamilton of Mary Esther, FL; and one son and daughter-in-law, Craig and Linda Sumner of Huntsville, AL. There are seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Also surviving is her sister, Joyce Sinclair of California and a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends.
The funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM, EDT on Saturday, July 10, 2010 at the Lake Mystic Baptist Church, three miles south of Bristol, FL on Highway 12, with Dr. Lewis Bullard and the Reverend James Jines, III officiating. The family will receive friends one hour before service time.
Pallbearers will be Alleen's nephews and honorary pallbearers will be member of the OES Chapter #179 and interment will follow at Lake Mystic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in memory of Alleen Sumner to the Blountstown United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 299, Blountstown, FL 32424.
Bevis Funeral Home in Bristol, (850) 643-3636, is in charge of the arrangements.
