William was the son of John M. Anderson and Harriet Rebecca James. His siblings were James M., Andrew J. and Sam R.

His half-siblings from his father's first marriage to Susan Raines, were Lucy Jane, Martha Elizabeth, George Washington, John M. Jr, Mary Catherine, Noah Peter and Thomas Jefferson.

He married Bertha Ethel Oliver, daughter of Mary Jane Newton and James Polk Oliver, on December 2, 1905 in Carroll County, Arkansas.
