MRS. LOUIS BRILES

The many friends of the family were greatly shocked to learn of the death of Mrs. Louis Briles, which occurred at her home in Whitebreast township, at an early hour on the morning of January 7, 1921, at the age of 77 years, 1 month and 12 days, after a brief illness of but five days with pneumonia, although she had been in failing health for several months.

Funeral services, conducted by Rev. E. A. McKim, of the Christian church, were held at the family home on Saturday afternoon at two o'clock, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Chariton cemetery by the side of her husband, who preceded her in death on July 15, 1919.

Martha J. Hogan was born in Corydon, Harrison county, Indiana, on November 26, 1843. She was married there on August 29, 1869, to Mr. Louis Briles, and shortly afterward they moved to Hood county, Texas, where they resided on a farm until August, 1881, when they came to Chariton. About twenty years ago they moved to the farm in Whitebreast township, where they resided until death claimed them.

Mr. and Mrs. Briles were the parents of four children, on daughter, Julia, dying in infancy. Those surviving are William R., Mary E. and O. E., all of Chariton. One sister and two brothers, Mrs. Lizzie Lake and John W. Hogan, of Chariton, and James Hogan, of Emison, Indiana, are also living.

When quite young deceased was converted and united with the United Brethren church in Indiana. She was a good Christian woman, devoted to her family, but always found time to lend a hand to those in need of assistance. She was a kind neighbor and was highly esteemed by all who knew her.

Her passing away will be mourned by a large circle of friends who will extend sincere sympathy to the sorrowing daughter and two sons and other relatives who survive.
