Death Beckons A. G. Horton, 86...Was Former Commissioner.

Arthur G. Horton, 86, a resident of Table Rock community for about four score years, died at the Pawnee County Hospital Sunday, November 20, where he had been hospitalized for several weeks.

Mr. Horton farmed for many years north of Table Rock, before becoming an employee of the county road department. He also served as county commissioner for eight years, representing the First District of the county.

Besides also serving on the Board of Education many years, he was a member of the Methodist Church for forty years, and a member of the Odd Fellow Lodge for twenty years.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the Methodist Church with the Rev. Alvin Trucano officiating. Interment was in the Table Rock cemetery.

OBITUARY-

Arthur Garfield Horton passed away at the Pawnee County Hospital on November 20, 1966 at 2:30 a.m. He was born in Humboldt, Nebraska on June 17, 1880 and was one of eight children of Benjamin Horton and Augusta Wombolde Horton.

He came to this area as a small child and has been a resident here ever since.

On September 3, 1900 he was married to Effie Jones and to this union were born two daughters, Mary Ritchie and Marjorie Duffin.

For eighteen years they farmed the Jones homestead three miles north of Table Rock. For many years he was a Pawnee County highway employee and served as County Commissioner for two terms beginning in 1944.

Art has been a member of the Methodist Church since 1926 and was received into membership by Rev. a. Swanson on confession of faith forty years ago.

Art also served on the Table Rock Board of Education for a number of years.

For twenty-five years, Art was a fellow worker int he Odd Fellow Lodge and was also a member of the Encampment.

The last three years of his life were spent in happy retirement with his brother-in-law, Will Alderman. Each of them took pride in their fishing ability at the Pawnee City Pond and enjoyed the outdoors together.

Mr. Horton was well known for his great sense of humor and this was evident in his great love of people. He had a great sense of peace in his soul, as he was never known to quarrel with anyone and was honest in all of his business dealings. His friends will remember him for his deep sense of locality and he will never be forgotten in these life-long friendships.

Those preceding him in death were his wife, Effie (1959) and his daughter Mary (1965). Those left to mourn his passing are his daughter, Marjorie Duffin of Madrid, Spain; his sister, Grace Doyle of Lincoln; two grandsons, one granddaughter; and three great-grandchildren; one son-in-law; a brother-in-law, William Alderman; and many friends.
