J.W. Walters was born November 10, 1838, in Bureau county, Illinois, and passed to his triumphant reward in Burley, Idaho, March 28, 1921. He was married to Fidelia Desch in the year, 1862. They came to Fairmont, Nebraska, in 1878, where the greater part of their active life was spent, having been engaged in farming and later in various positions of responsibility in public life, always being found punctual and aligned for justice. He was a devoted member of the Methodist Episcopal church, always ready to serve every noble cause. He was a prominent representative and state worker in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, ever holding places of honor and respect that were the gift of the order and the goodwill of the members.

Mr. Walters' first wife died October 7, 1887, and in 1888 he was married to Miss Mattie Brubaker of York county, one daughter was born to this union.

He was the father of eight children: Charles E. of Portland, Oregon; George W. of Iowa; Bert E. of Newton, Kansas; Roy J. of Columbus; Mrs. Royce Heckendorn of Burley, Idaho; two children dying in infancy and a daughter, Mrs. Mertie Matteson, passed to the Great Beyond during the month of March, 1918. Such a life that meets the world as it is, and leaves a trail of light, planting flowers where thorns were growing, bringing joy where sorrow hath prevailed, has been the constant mission of this life that has just laid aside the armor, after having spent eighty-two years, four months and eighteen days in this preparatory life, and triumphantly finds receptions in the Master's presence, where the "wicked cease from troubling and the weary are at rest."

The remains were conveyed from Burley, Idaho, by the oldest son, Charles E. and the funeral services were conducted from the Methodist Episcopal church in Fairmont, Nebraska, Friday, April 1, at 3 o'clock. The obsequies were under the direction of the I.O.O.F., and a number of visitors from neighboring lodges were in attendance. Also the Rebekah lodge was present in a body. The pastor, Rev. Charles P. Lang, delivered the address, and interment was made in the Fairmont cemetery.

Relatives present from out of town were two sons, Charles E. Walters of Portland, Oregon, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Walters of Columbus, Nebraska, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph W. Walters with her sister of Omaha, Mr. and Mrs. Glen Matteson and two sons of Fremont and John Cole of Lincoln. A number of Odd Fellows from other towns were also in attendance.
