Morton was the only son of Flora (Houghton) and Morton J. Dennison Prouty of New Boston, Illinois. He was born in Mercer County, Illinois on Mar 18, 1918. Census reocords show his family living in Saint Paul Twp, Ramsey Co, MN in 1920. In 1930 they are found in Galesburg Twp, Knox Co, IL. Morton's grandmother was Josephine C. (Dennison) Prouty. She was from the William Dennison family, they were amoung the first settlers in New Boston.

Morton married Elsie Davidson (Shipman) in 1945. She was the daughter of Johnson & Catherine Jane (Lawson) Shipman. After their marrieage they settled in Florence, Lauderdale Co, AL. in 1949.

Morton Dennison Prouty, Jr. at Greenview Cemetery in Florence, AL was the Poet Laureate of the State of Alabama from 1988 to 1991. He was sworn in to this high office in 1988 by Alabama Governor Guy Hunt in state offices in Montgomery. He was the author of many fine books of poems and was active in local, state and national poetry circles. He authored many very fine books of poetry and was an outstanding man.
