"FIRST SABBATARIAN CHURCH" : Rev. Joshua Clark, second son of Thomas Clark, was born in 1717. He was chosen deacon, Aug. 24, 1756, and ordained an elder, in May, 1768. He succeeded Rev. Thomas Hiscox in the pastorate, in 1773. As showing the cost of books in his day, it is recorded that the Bible he used in the pulpit cost about forty dollars. At the commencement of his ministry, the church enrolled two-hundred and seventy-eight. He was for a number of years, a member of the Legislature of the State, and one of the first trustees of Brown University. A man of decided ability and great devotion, he was held in high esteem. Three-hundred and ninety-five were added to the church under his ministry. He died March 8, 1793, in the seventy-sixth year of his age.
