James was born in Doylesburg, PA. At the age of 18 he decided to go West. When he got to Wooster, Ohio, he had run out of money, so he got a job working on a farm for 3 years. He then went to Denver, Colorado, where he worked driving a horse-drawn streetcar. He went to Cripple Creek, Colorado and that's when he became aware of Katie Fluck—because she and some friends had placed an ad in the newspaper as mail order brides. He wrote to Katie and they struck up a relationship. Eventually he came to Iowa meet Katharina Fluck after their romance developed. Her parents did not know anything about this.

They were married at her parents' home and left for Colorado, saying they were returning to James' hide and tallow business. Instead, James and a friend had staked a claim to mine for gold. That failed and they ended up penniless.

They returned to Doylesburg, PA and their daughter, (Margaret) Katharina, was born. A month later, James' wife, Katie, died.

James hired Ella Van Scyoc to help with baby Katie, and they fell in love. They married on July 7, 1903. They had two children, Boise, born March 13, 1904, and Amber, born November 6, 1907.

Less than three years later, Ella died on June 27, 1910 in the back of a buckboard as she was being taken to a doctor for a ruptured appendix.

Lizzie Fluck, Kate's unmarried sister, came out to help James with 9-year-old Katie, 6-year-old Boise and 3-year-old Amber. She and James eventually married. Later, they moved to Ford, Virginia.

After James and Katie's daughter Katie died, James and Lizzie moved to Mount Gilead, Ohio to be near Amber and Boise.
