Ralph was named for his maternal grandfather, Andrew Ralph, who helped raise Lorena after her mother, Alice Ralph Reeves, passed away when she was four years old.

"A Chief Warrant Officer W4, Mr. Herndon had been with the Illinois National Guard for 35 years and was a former member of the 106th Calvary. A veteran of World War II, he served during that time From November 1940 to November 1945, served in the Korean Conflict from March of 1951 to September of 1952 and from February 1961 to February 1962 in the Berlin Crisis." From His obituary in the Illinois State Journal, Springfield, Thursday. January 27, 1972.

His great grandfather was William Henry Herndon, Abraham Lincoln's good friend, law partner and biographer.
