The record of the Gamble family is taken from the family bibles of Samuel Gamble, an early citizen of Meigs County, and is of interest to the many descendants of the pioneer, Robert Gamble, Sr., father of Samuel Gamble, who emigrated from Virginia to what is now Tennessee shortly after the close of the Revolution and settled on the Holston River in Knox County.

Robert Gamble, Sr. was born in Ireland in July 1732, and came with his parents to America about the year 1735. He grew up in Augusta County, Virginia, where his parents settled, and where descendants of the original emigrant still live.

Robert Gamble, Sr. married Mary McElroy about the year 1755 and they were the parents of a large family of children.

A deposition regarding certain land in Augusta County, Virginia, and recorded in Chalkley's records of Augusta County, Volume 2, page 274, was made by Robert Gamble, Sr. on Oct. 25, 1806, in Knox County, Tennessee. Robert Gamble deposed that he know the land in question first in 1741 or 1742, when a man named Patterson lived on it, and that he (Gamble) had resided in the vicinity from 1737 to 1772. He stated that his age was then 74 years.
