Samuel W. Badgett, age 91, died peacefully on July 4, 2010. He was born in Winston-Salem on October 24th, 1918 to Samuel and Mollie Badgett. Sam proudly served his country in the U.S. Army in World War II where he was involved in five major battles from Normandy to the Battle of the Bulge. After World War II he graduated from the University of North Carolina with a degree in Commerce.
He worked for the NC State Highway Department and the Office of State Personnel for 41 years and retired in 1991. Sam then enjoyed 19 years of retirement including frequent reunions with his WWII buddies and even more frequent rounds of golf.
He is survived by his two daughters, Cynthia Sullivan of Raleigh, and Wendy May and her husband Douglas of Blowing Rock; his two grandsons, Kevin Sullivan of Mobile, AL, and Jason Sullivan of Portland, OR; his dear companion, Nancy Dail of Raleigh; her children Tammy and Ryan; and their families. Other survivors include Kari and Matt Baumann of Elizabeth, CO, and Scott and Vicki May with great-grandchildren Spencer and Elsa of Lyme Center, NH. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Riddle Badgett.
Sam's family sincerely thank Bola and Faye, his care givers for nearly 3 years, and Hospice.
Funeral services will be at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 E. Millbrook Road on Wednesday, July 7th at 2:00. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2. Interment will follow the service at Historic Oakwood Cemetery.
