When Amanda was about 12 years old her father was murdered (in what is now Coryell County, Texas) for his horse and a new saddle leaving Lydia to raise six daughters and one son, born after his death.
Amanda married George Hay December 30, 1858. To this union two children were born: Lydia Amanda (1860-1938) who married George Elam, and George Alexander (1863-1943) who married Sarah Gibbons.
Amanda died May 16, 1863 and is buried in the Bandera, Texas Cemetery. George later married her sister, Virginia Minear.
