Actress. After graduating from Philadelphia's Friends School, she embarked upon a career in show business. Among the studios she worked for were Pathé, Universal, Mutual, Metro, and Hal Roach. She really came to prominence when she became the leading lady of the legendary comedian Harold Lloyd after his original leading lady Bebe Daniels left to work for Famous Players-Lasky Studios in 1919. They appeared together in a number of short subjects and feature-length films until 1923. Amont them were 'I Do' (1921), 'Number, Please?' (1920), 'Grandma's Boy' (1922), 'Safety Last!' (1923), and 'From Hand to Mouth' (1919). As time wore on they were no longer acting; they fell in love and became a couple in real life as well as onscreen, and got married in February of 1923. Shortly after their marriage she retired from the screen, though she did make two additional films in later years, 'Too Many Crooks' (1927) and 'The Devil's Sleep' (1949). Her marriage was one of Hollywood's longest, happiest, and most successful, and produced three children, Harold, Jr., Gloria, and Marjorie Elisabeth. The first two were their biological children; Marjorie (whom they nicknamed Peggy) was adopted in 1929 at the age of five. In addition, she and her husband took in and raised their granddaughter Suzanne after her mother Gloria suffered a nervous breakdown. They lived in a house called Greenacres, which her husband had built for them. This house was one of the most famous luxury homes in early Hollywood. Mildred was also best friends with the actresses Marion Davies and Colleen Moore, and the three of them would often get together to sew. She enjoyed a peaceful quiet retirement with her husband and their family, dying from a heart attack at the age of sixty-eight.
