Shortly after his birth the family moved to Marshall County, Alabama where his sister Mary Ann, brothers James Albert, William Henry and David Abney were born. His mother died after the birth of David Abney, when George was 7 years old. His father remarried Mary Ann Prisket 16 Sept 1862 and they had 6 more children.
