George Washington Abney,the son of Benjamin D. Abney and Sarah Green, was born in Merietts, Cobb County, Georgia. He was named after his father's brother George W. Abney (born 1837). Shortly after his birth the family moved to Marshall County, Alabama where his sister Mary Ann, brothers James Albert, William Henry and David Abney were born. His mother died after the birth of David Abney, when George was 7 years old. His father remarried Mary Ann Prisket 16 Sept 1862 and they had 6 more children.
George W. married Olivia Josephine Hill on 4 Jan 1877 in Marshall County, Alabama. They had their first son Christopher C. Abney and two daughters Mattie W. and Mary Francis there. They moved to Gilmer, Texas where their son Perino Frank was born. George W. Abney died of Brights disease on 15 Sept 1937, two years before his wife Olive J.
