The sad death of Mrs. Maude Gathright Ranson, mother of J.H. Ranson of the law firm of Henderson & Ranson which occurred at their home at the Edge Apartments in this city Tuesday afternoon about 5 o’clock, cast a gloom over the entire community. Mrs. Ranson went out for the afternoon and returned to her apartments about 4:30 p.m. and telephoned her son, who was still at his office, telling him of some little packages she wanted brought, and asking him what time he would be home for supper. He told her he would be there about 5:15, but, finishing his work, he went on home a little earlier than he expected, and when he went to his mother’s room at 5 p.m. he found her dead on the bed. Physicians were hastily summoned, and they pronounced her death due to heart disease, and said she had been dead only a few minutes when her son arrived. Mrs. Ranson was 72 years old and was a daughter of Thomas S. Gathright, the first president of A. & M. College. She was a woman of beautiful Christian character, a member of the Baptist church, and beloved by all who knew her. The body was taken to Gonzales on this morning’s train, where it will be interred in the old family burying ground beside her husband who died many years ago. A sister of the deceased and a niece and nephew who live in Palestine, came on the train that took the body, and accompanied the son, Mr. J.H. Ranson on his sad journey. F.L. Henderson of this city also accompanied them. Bryan Daily Eagle, 6 April 1921, page 4
