The Military Records show he died 1 February 1864. This grave marker shows his death was 31 January 1864.

A few quick comments about Alphonzo Eugene Julian DEVOL. Although his headstone gives 31 JAN 1863 for his death (his mother used this date, as well, in her pension application) his service record and the hospital record both indicate he died (of small pox) on 1 FEB 1863. As is the case with his brother Edward, also on this marker, it is unclear that he was actually buried here. My great grandfather Elmer DEVOL always insisted that he was the one who learned the date of Edward's death and that he got that information shortly before his father died (1908). Clifford Ocheltree
