He and Rachel settled in Coventry, CT briefly where four of their children were born; later removed to Stonington, CT before May 1750 where two more of their children were born. By 1754 they were in Preston, CT [next town over] as the Griswold 1st Congregational Church records show that the Burtons were admitted as church members on 3 April 1754 "from Stonington". This church was originally called the North or 2nd Church in Preston. In 1765 the Burton clan removed to Norwich, Windsor County, VT where they built the first frame house in town. Jacob Burton Jr was one of the five framers of Vermont Declaration of Independence in January 1777; he was also a member of the June, July and December conventions in 1777 which adopted the name Vermont and State Constitution of which he was a Signer. He was also Norwich's representative in the first General Assembly of Vermont in 1778. He died 12 June 1798 in his 83rd year. His headstone carved in 1798 has deteriorated quite badly. The tablestone placed on his grave was probably done around 1810. It details his life and successes.
