Joseph S. Curgus, 68, died of heart failure March 3, 1999, while on vacation in Green Valley, Ariz. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Kehl's Forest Lawn Chapel. Burial with full military honors will follow at Fort Richardson National Cemetery. Mr. Curgus was born Nov. 8, 1930, in Aguilar, Colo. He graduated from Aguilar High School and from Western State College in Gunnison, Colo. Mr. Curgus was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He came to Alaska just prior to statehood and had taught school in Big Delta, Juneau, Sitka and Anchorage. He retired from the Anchorage School District in 1987. Mr. Curgus also was a general contractor and owned a construction company, Curgus Construction. He is survived by his wife, Loretta of Anchorage; sons, Joseph A. Curgus of Anchorage, James A. Curgus of Plano, Texas, Christopher S. Curgus of Girdwood and Andrew K. Curgus of Albuquerque, N.M.; daughters, Michelle Freeman of Abilene, Texas, Johanna Curgus of Los Angeles, Connie Kaser of Anchorage and Marjo Curgus of Santa Fe, N.M.; and three sisters, Mildred Dosen of Aguilar, Violet Sandri of Denver and Pat Van Meter of Riverside, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Josephine Curgus. The family requests that memorial contributions be directed to the American Heart Association, 1057 W. Fireweed Lane, Suite 206, Anchorage 99503; or to the American Diabetes Association, 801 W. Fireweed Lane, Suite 103, Anchorage 99503.
