Private First Class Cupryna was a member of Company G, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division. He was Killed in Action while fighting the enemy at Boulder City, near Pon Bu Dong and the Imjim River, in Korea on July 25, 1953. Private First Class Cupryna was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

John joined the Marines 1 Apr 1952 and was interred 24 Mar 1955. His wife, Cathrine E. Cupryna, survived him. John died of wounds suffered from small arms fire.

Boulder City was the last ground action by the United States Marine Corps in the Korean War. PFC John Cupryna almost came home.
