In the War of 1812 David enlisted in the U.S. Army was thrown from his horse and disabled and was later discharged. in 1815 he and his family migrated to Kentucky, settling in Lincoln County, later to Casey County, and in 1824 to Garrard County.
David married Margaret "Peggy" Marsh April 6, 1824 in Garrard County, Kentucky. Peggy perished in a fire in Madison County, Kentucky Jan 7, 1859. David operated the Buckeye Tavern, in Garrard County from 1825 until his death. Peggy sold the old tavern house in 1842.
