Services for Mrs. Jana Van Hemert, 95, were officiated by Tim Hutton, minister of Church Street Church of Christ.

Her parents were born in Holland. Her parent's children were all born in America, but their culture and names were very much like their Holland ancestry.

Jana was one of 14 children. Her siblings were: Lena, Arie, Gysbert, Nellie, Lizzie, Gerrit, Jana, Follina, John, Simon, Bertha and Henrietta [twins], Hugo. One died in infancy.

Jana Steenhoek married Gysbert Van Hemert on 20 July 1898 in Marion County, Iowa.

Gysbert Van Hemert purchased 160 acres of farming land west of Newcastle for $25.00 an acre. His family moved from Marion County, Iowa to Newcastle on December of 1908. It was a lonesome trip for his wife, at any time during the trip, she would have turned back to Iowa. Mrs. Van Hemert was a homemaker and member of the Methodist Church.

Survived by two sons - Lynderd Van Hemert and Ira G. Van Hemert; one brother - Hugo Steenhoek; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren.
