Lewis R. Avery, 94 of Shelbyville, passed away on Friday, Oct. 30 at the Heritage House Convalescent Center.

He was born in Decatur County on April 26, 1915 to parents Lewis P. Avery and Lena (Critzer) Avery. He was married on April 29, 1950 to surviving spouse Norma E. (Nail) Avery

Survivors include: one son, Gary (Linda) Avery of Shelbyville; two daughters, Terry (Wayne) Tucker of Shelbyville and Christine (Les) Lohrum of Versailles; grandchildren Dana Ball, Derek Tucker and Jared Avery; and great-grandchildren Peyton Ball and Paige Ball. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Marceille Henderson and one granddaughter, Skyler Avery.

During his life, he worked at the shipping department for the American Legion Dept. of Indianapolis for 18 years. He retired in 1975. He was a graduate for the St. Paul High School, class of 1934 and was a member of the St. Paul Christian Church for more than 60 years. He was also involved with the Past American Legion in Shelbyville and was a veteran of WWII, having served in the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant.

Visitation is scheduled for 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 1 at the Glenn E. George Funeral Home in St. Paul. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 2 at the funeral home and burial will follow at the Paul Hill Cemetery with Rev. James Farnsley officiating. Memorials may be made to the Hospice of South Central Indiana and St. Paul Christian Church in care of the funeral home. Military graveside rites will be conducted by local veterans.
