Erwin was born in Chicago in 1914, to John and Gertrude Nowak, and had one sister Eleanor who was born in 1918. His family moved to Sacramento about 1930, where he completed his post graduate education in Civil Engineering and found employment with Sacramento Architectural firms as a draftsman as early as 1933. Erwin served in W. W. II as a private, enlisting on June 5, 1943 in Sacramento. He became a California State Licensed Architect on September 27, 1958 and thru the years, Erwin worked for various Architects including Harry J. Devine Sr. and Jr. Erwin and his first wife Helen, were very active in the Sacramento Camellia Society, helping to organize events and enjoyed cultivating many Camellia varieties at home. Cat lovers, the Nowak's are seen here holding their Siamese Orientals in this holiday photograph. Erwin lost his wife Helen in 1966 after her three year battle with cancer, when she passed away at the age of only 42. After Helen's death, Erwin married his second wife Norma Albin in 1967. Shortly after their marriage, Erwin and Norma sold the house in Sacramento County and moved to an area close to the Crocker Art Museum. Erwin lost Norma in 1985, retired in 1993 and passed away in 2001.
