Edmond Dutton was born 7 September 1793 in Charles County, Maryland, the son of Zachariah Dutton and his unknown first wife. Edmond moved with his parents to Granville County, North Carolina, about 1795. During the War of 1812, he served in the Virginia Militia in Captain William Green's and Captain William Palmer's Company based in Lunenberg County, Virginia. After the war, he traveled to Alabama, settling in Lawrence County, Alabama, about 1818.
He was a farmer and prominent citizen of the Basham's Gap (Penn) community, and a leader in the Friendship Baptist Church, serving as a delegate to the Muscle Shoals Baptist Association multiple times.
During the Civil War, Edmond Dutton was known as a proponent of the Union cause, and was seen as a Unionist leader in his community. His father having served his country in the American Revolution, and Edmond having served in the War of 1812, he adhered to the Union and believed disunity was disloyalty. A son-in-law, George S. Hughes, served in the Union Army, as well as a number of cousins.
Edmond Dutton died 28 Dec 1882 and was buried in Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery.
