Sarah Elizabeth Austin, the youngest of eight children of David Harmon Austin and Lydia Jane Hovey, was b. Sept. 5, 1823 at Harmony Mission, in then Osage Indian Territory, now Bates County, MO. She was b. at the mission after her parents arrived as missionaries to the Osage Indians in 1821.
Sarah d. Mar. 11, 1884 at New Albany, Indiana as the widow Garrison (obit.). In the June 1880 census she and her unmarried youngest son, John Flavel Garrison, Jr., were residing in the east adjoining county of Clark, Indiana.

On May 19, 1842 at Little Osage, then in Bates, now in south adjoining Vernon County, MO, Sarah m. John Flavel Garrison, Sr., s. of Mark Garrison and Mary Judge, b. circa 1810 at Scottsville, Allen County, KY. They would have four known children before Sarah's husband left the family to accompany two of his brother-in-laws to California seeking their fortune in gold. Unfortunaterly, all three died at California without success in their quest. Sarah and the children remained at Missouri and taken in by extended family until the children reached maturity. Sarah never remarried.

• i. Lydia Jane Garrison, a twin, b. July 27, 1843, d. in infancy circa 1854.
• ii. Sarah Emeline Garrison, a twin, b. July 27, 1843, d. Nov. 9, 1921 at Seymour, MO; m. June 12, 1866 at Vernon County, MO, Simeon B. Davis, who divorced late in their marriage. Seven children of the family.
• iii. Rev. Marcus Irenæas Garrison, b. Sept. 7, 1847, d. Apr. 5, 1897 at British India as a Christian missionary; m. Elizabeth Day of Indiana, dau. of E. R. (Ezekiel Reeves) Day and Lucinda Baldwin. Seven children of which five lived past infancy. One was dau. Ruth, a missionary at British India who m. James F. Brabazon.
• iv. John Flavel Garrison, Jr., b. in 1850, d. July 14, 1881 at New Albany, Indiana (obit.). In the June 1880 census at Clark County, Indiana, John was residing with his widowed mother, unmarried, age 29 and a teacher.
