Born the daughter of Catherine Ebert and James Scanlon in Akron, Ohio, my paternal grandmother Cora was the eldest of nine children. She married my grandfather, Charles Denbrock, on January 2, 1907. She passed of heart disease at the young age of 52. Cora left behind two teenage sons, then 13 and 17, with their father- who would follow her less than four years later. I never met her, although my father spoke lovingly of her and the family said when she died they lost the best one.
