On Halloween night 1918, Walter was visiting with friends in their home when a group of boys began playing pranks at the home. They threw rocks and dirt on the porch and on the side of the house. Walter went outside to tell the boys to stop, when Frank Sowders, 15, one of the boys in the group, pulled out a gun and shot Walter in the stomach. Walter held on but succumbed to his injuries four days later.
Sowders was tried and convicted of manslaughter, and was sentenced to 1 to 15 years in prison. He was a free man at the time of the 1920 census.
