Orangeburg - Mr. Wyman W. Bates Sr., 75, of 1047 Columbia Road, Orangeburg, died Sunday, March 4, 2007, at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital. Due to renovations at First Baptist Church, funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 7, at St. Andrews United Methodist Church, Columbia Road, Orangeburg, with the Rev. Larry Jones officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Bates was born in Norway, a son of the late John K. and Bertha Sutcliffe Bates. He was a retired Warrant Officer (CW4) for the South Carolina Army National Guard and the Civil Service. He was a member of First Baptist Church, serving as a deacon, usher and Sunday School teacher. He was a Mason and a member of Progress Lodge No. 356. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Mrs. Iris "Chick" Metts Bates of the home; a son, Wyman W. "Wynn" Bates and wife, Paige, of Lexington; a daughter, Lesa and husband, Bradley Steedley of Columbia; grandchildren, Alex and Abby Bates of Lexington and Meredith and McKenzie Mowry of Columbia; a brother, Walter K. Bates of Norway; nieces and nephews.
