In this sepulchre are interred the remains of an illustrious man, distinguished by his talent, judgment, and learning; of a most amiable disposition, of unblemished morals, of unwearied benevolence, and adorned with every private virtue; much beloved in the family circle; a faithful minister and eloquent preacher of the holy gospel ; in the administration of the affairs of the Church of Scotland, a pacific, prudent, and successful presbyter ; of well-earned reputation as Principal of the University of Edinburgh ; a grave, eloquent, candid, and acute historian ; to whose memory these perish able monuments cannot do justice, but which his own writings, more lasting than bronze, shall forbid to die, and testify to all future generations how great an ornament and light of his own age and country, already celebrated for liberal arts, useful knowledge, and elegant learning, was WILLIAM ROBERTSON, professor of divinity. He was born AD 1721, died AD 1793.
