Walter Levi Upchurch
Walter Levi "Buddy" Upchurch, 65, a retired farmer, passed away at his home in Lexington surrounded by family and loved ones, Wednesday, June 20, 2007, after a 16 year battle with cancer. Funeral services were held Friday, June 22 at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Lexington with Rev. Michael O'Brien officiating. Burial was held in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Lexington. Southern Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Buddy was born in Holmes County on September 20, 1941, son of the late Walter L. Upchurch, Jr., and Josephine Holder Upchurch.
Prior to farming, Buddy taught computer programming at Jones and Holmes Jr. Colleges. He also wrote computer programs for numerous large businesses throughout Mississippi. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Lexington.
During his time off, Buddy enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren hunting, fishing and other outdoor activities. He was a former member of Little River Hunting Club.
He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Barton Upchurch of Lexington; a son, Steve Upchurch and his wife Pam of Kosciusko; daughters, Sandra Cothran and her husband Brad and Melissa Ainsworth, all of Lexington; one brother-in-law, C.E. "Bubba" Barton and his wife Carol of Ebenezer; seven grandchildren; and one great grandchild.
Pallbearers were: Binnie Scaife, Burwell Barton, Jerry Watts, Tony Holder, Phil Williamson, George Ellison, Hugh Nichols, and Gene Austin. Honorary pallbearers were former members of Little River Hunting Club.
The family has requested memorials be made to the Aunt Fanny's Seekers Fund, c/o First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 237, Lexington, MS 39095.
