Jane was born in Smith Co. Tn., the daughter of Adam Teel & Caty Baker. Adam was from the Netherlands. Jane married a widower, James K Witcher in about 1837, as her first child. John W Witcher, was born in 1838. Due to drought and a local depression, many folks left that part of Tennessee in the 1840s. She and her family were enumerated in the 1850 Perry Co.Illinois census. By 1851 they were in Denton Co. Texas. BY 1860 they were in Hamilton Co., Texas. Her family had problems with the folks who moved to Texas after the War ended in 1865. Her husband was a rancher and the newcomers were mostly farmers and farmers took over grazing land and watering places for cattle. Her husband and youngest son, Adam Teel Witcher Sr. were murdered by a masked mob on Sept 23, 1872 in Hamilton. Afterwards Jane and others of her family moved to Montague Co., Tx., where she preempted land south of Forestburg, Tx. on present day Hwy 455. Jane's daughter, Sarah Catherine Holley, and her children lived with her. Also her grandchildren by Adam Teel Witcher Sr. lived there. Jane sued in Hamilton Co. for and won custody of of her three grandchildren by her son Adam Teel Witcher
Her grandson, Thomas Franklin Holley Sr. bought her original marble grave marker before he moved to Wheeler Co. Tx in 1917. In the mid 1990s, I had the new granite markers made in Elbert Co. Ga., and shipped them to Texas, where a cousin erected them. The images of James & Jane Teel Witcher were made from a Tintype ( with a nail hole in it) that was in a photo album that Thomas Franklin Holley Sr. (her Uncle Tom) gave Jewell B. Blankenship Reynolds ( 1894-1995) for her tenth birthday. I saw the album Sept 20-21, 1992 at Jewell's home in Cove, Ar. Had copies made of all her photos and Tintypes.
Jane was my ( Ron Holley's ) second great-grandmother.
