Mary Alice Wilson was born 28 April 1862 in Wellsville, Cache, Utah, to Sylvester Wilson and Mary Wood. Her parents had been married in Cache Valley 26 May 1861. Mary Wood had come from England when she was 11 years old with her mother. Her father had drowned at sea before she was born. Sylvester Wilson's family had pioneered to Utah about 1849. The Wellsville settlement was only 6 years old when Mary Alice was born and she was born in a one room log cabin with a dirt roof and floor. The first settlers were given 5 to 10 acre farms. When Mary was about 5 years old the family moved from Wellsville to the new settlement of Oxford, in Idaho territory, but the settlers still considered it part of Utah as it was a settlement in Cache Valley. The first school was started in Oxford in 1867 and Mary attended that school. In 1877 Sylvester Wilson moved to Wilsonville, Emery County. Wilsonville got its name from the Wilson family and is five miles east of Castle Dale. Mary Alice Wilson and Selar Cheney were married at Wilsonville August 10 1879 by her father, who was the presiding elder.
