Clarkson and Alice both worked on the Pan American Highway project. Clarkson worked on various government construction projects in Guam, Formosa, Nicaragua, Thailand, Cambodia, Taiwan and Bangladash.
At the time of his death, Clarkson was a construction manager for Signal Companies, a construction firm in Huntington Beach, California. He passed away following surgery for an abdominal aneurysm.
A memorial service was conducted for his family and friends at the Church of Religious Science. After cremation, the ashes were scattered over California desert land near Fountain Valley.
A tree was planted in memory of Clarkson at Helm Park in Fountain Valley, California, with donations from many friends and family.
